One more for the ladies...
I am just curious what you ladies did when it came to nursing and clothing. I mean, I have 2 nursing bra's, 1 nursing tank top and my mom and sis went out to get me some pj's which will be good for night time and around the house...but what about everything else?
did you just wear normal clothes and take your shirt off or push it up?
did you have specific shirts/outfits for nursing?
what was practical?
essential?
did you buy/use anything you found out was silly and useless in the end?
I am a bit clueless about this and figured a little girlfriend research was in order so I knew what to plan and how to make good decisions.

I just wore normal clothes and tried to layer if possible. I had one nursing nightgown that I rarely wore. I can see the merits of having a few nursing tops to make things a little more discreet when you're out and about, but I just figured I wouldn't want to wear them forever, so why not just get used to being discreet in my regular clothes?
Good nursing bras are IMPERATIVE, though!!
Normal clothes, NO DRESSES unless you can pull it side to side. Only get two bras per size (oh yes, your size will change before you know it) and have lots of those sticky pad thingies available.
I used to nurse in the car at first until I got the whole blanket cover up thing down, then I discovered nursing mothers rooms. I just didn't like to be exposed but you can do whatever you want, the law is on our breastfeeding sides and if you want to be out there, you can! I think it's just a matter of your comfort level.
So glad nursing is going well for you!! :)
I actually really like nursing tops. Unfortunately, they ARE expensive, but I found some good deals on sale and at the eBay outlet of Motherwear.com.
I prefered regular clothing or Japanese Weekend nursing tops. I always tried to find something with a V neck, then put a stretchy Maurices cami under it. This would allow me to either pull up, or down from the neck to allow exposure. Blankie over the top for public places.
I used to do nursing bras, but I found that after the first several, a good Victorias secret padded push up bra was best. I prefered Secret Embrace. They are thick enough that most leakes don't show so well, and you can just pull the breast out from the top to nurse. No snaps and buckles involved...plus it is pretty...that is a rarity with nursing bras. Yes, you will have to be fit, and you might take a size larger or so than your normal size.
The key to having a bra work properly is to learn to manage a let down. When a let down strikes, take your forearms and give your nipples a bit of a hug...apply pressure till letdown is over. Then find a place to nurse asap. This will help prevent leaks. If you do not apply pressure with let downs, one or both breasts will leak and you will look a bit...ya.
I didn't use pads with the last couple using this technique.
In bed, I wear Victorias Secret shelf bra cami. I just pull the neck down to expose breast. They are nice and stretchy.
I have several really pretty nursing bras I have hardly warn. Like I said, I prefered regular VS bras. What size would you need?
Got my first "nursing top" on the fifth kid. I would reserve any money you spend on "nursing clothes" to special occasion wear. Spend it on nursing bras Medela is a good brand for me (imo). Clearance, clearance, clearance. Big t-shirts, not exactly sexy, but neither is spit up.
I just lifted my shirt up. And when in public, made sure I had a really big blanket to wrap over my shoulder.
maylene...36 or 38 & C or D...just depends...i'm in between for both...i got a fitting at the lactation boutique in the hospital. right now i have 2 bras and they are 36 C. they fit good at times and tight at others..
I haven't read all the other responses, and it looks like you've gotten some good advice so far...
I wore normal shirts - I found that the "nursing shirts" were ridiculous and I ended up fiddling with them so much that I exposed more than I would have w/ a regular shirt.
Nursing tank/bras are okay. But sorta uncomfy and not much support. I didn't love them. I think I had one...
Sleeping bras were a must for me. Just enough support to keep you from...ahem..."flopping" around and to keep the nursing pads in.
I wore those until about 7-8 months when my flow really stabalized.
:) You're doing great.
Jamie - thanks for doing other new moms (or, in my case, mother-to-be) a service here! I'm bookmarking this page. :) Good stuff.
